{ RATTIE FACTS } Greetings, fellow IGers! Blossom and I would like to provide you with some rat knowledge so you can walk away a less rodently-challenged member of society. This lovely little animal is much too discriminated against, and I think it's time to change that. So, without further ado, let's have some Rattie Facts! Rats are by far the smartest of all domesticated rodents, a group which also consists of mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, rabbits, and more. It is one of the top ten smartest mammals, as well, and some experts say they are at least as smart as dogs when it comes to learning tricks. Rats are actually very clean by nature; they frequently lick their front paws and rub their little faces clean, and use the nails of the back ones to scratch and comb! It is usually the cage, not the animal, that you smell. Not only are domesticated rats smarter than other little furries, but they are also more sociable and affectionate. They grow quickly attached to their people and love to snuggle; many are also impartial to riding around on shoulders. ;) Ever wondered why we test medicines and such things on rats? We have very similar physiologies. In fact, according to studies, our genetic codes are more like those of rats than of cats or dogs, and our nervous systems work in ways very much like those of rats. The tail of a rat serves two main purposes: to aid balance and to regulate body temperature. The Manx rat--much like the cat of the same name in that it has been bred to be tailless--is actually more prone to heatstroke than others. That's all for now! Thanks for reading. :3
